A serial killer known as the Riverton Ripper, thought to be dead, returns sixteen years later to kill seven youths born on the night of his death. When the legend turns out to be true, the victims run around confused and afraid not knowing if the killer is still alive or if his soul has been reincarnated as one of them. The group of seven dwindle in number as they try to discover the truth, and they find plenty more than they were looking for.
That sounds like a scary movie right? Unfortunately not this time around, and not even the hands of Wes Craven are able to add fright to My Soul to Take. The way some talk about Craven, you would think he could put out a decent horror film. I'd have to say I'm not the slightest bit impressed with this one. Complete with terrible acting, and even worse 3D effects, you really have to ask where the $15,000,000 budget had gone, because it obviously wasn't in this movie.
The acting in My Soul to Take is the worst I have ever seen on the big screen. I'm not sure if the actors couldn't remember their original lines half the time or if there just wasn't a script to began with, but I'm pretty sure half of the movie was improvised. The was no feeling from any of the actors and absolutely no effort that I could see.
The technical aspects of the movie were not bad for the most part; great lighting, clean shots, and the audio is quality, but isn't this supposed to be 3D? Sure they add in a little depth here and there, but other than that there is nothing I recall that put the 3D effects to use. This is really the most upsetting part of the entire experience. I felt completely cheated and robbed of the extra $3 charge for 3D, especially since there wasn't even $1 worth of 3D in the movie.
My Soul to Take is far from the frightening thriller it is made out to be, and even further from the 3D movie it was billed as. My Soul to take comes packed with less than B acting, no reasoning for 3D effects, and a couple of nice looking girls. Being an R rated film, it's unfortunate that you still don't get to see enough of the girls to make them, or any part of this movie worth your while. If you are looking for something scary, I suggest you spend your evening out at a haunted house. My Soul to Take makes an episode of Goosebumps seem horrifying.
