Music Review - Melvins, The Bride Screamed Murder - Ipecac

Since combining forces on the staggeringly awesome 'A Senile Animal', the King Buzzo-led Melvins-meets-Big-Business juggernaut has been a beast without peer. The only problem, ironically, is that '...Animal' was so freakin' great that subsequent releases have had a tough time measuring up to the bar of ass-kickery it set. Sure, last year's 'Nude With Boots' had its moments, but it was more on par with, say, 'Stoner Witch' in the ever-growing Melvins' catalog, rather than top-shelf placement alongside 'Houdini' or '...Animal'.

The band's latest 'The Bride Screamed Murder', while not quite reaching the epic heights of '...Animal', still delivers enough classic riffage and bellowing vocals that you will undoubtedly be suffering from what can only be deemed 'Melvins neck' after the first few songs. Opener 'The Water Glass' is a bizarre time-shift goof-track of guitar heroics, ending in a 'Caddyshack'-worthy call-and-response breakdown that is equal parts hilarious and head scratching. From there the Melvins are off to the races, with 'Evil New War God' and 'Pig House' delivering the goods in epic form. These are tunes you will be revisiting for some time, so start doing finger pushups now in anticipation.

"I'll Finish You Off' is a down tempo number that continues to demonstrate why the band will never completely shrug off those pesky Sabbath comparisons, their take on The Who standard 'My Generation' is just plain weird, and 6+ minute closer 'P.G. x 3' sounds like the theme from 'Midnight Cowboy' on a Salvia binge. In other words, everything you've come to expect from the Melvins and, as always, so much more. Get this ASAP.
